What is autism?

Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that affects how individuals perceive, process, and interact with the world around them. It influences areas such as social communication, sensory experiences, patterns of thinking, and emotional regulation.

Autism is described as a "spectrum" because it presents differently in each person. Some individuals may require significant support in daily life, while others may live independently but still experience challenges in navigating social expectations, managing sensory input, or coping with changes in routine.

The development of autistic traits is influenced by a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Autism is not caused by parenting style, life experiences, or personal choices.

Early identification, understanding, and the right support can make a profound difference in helping autistic individuals thrive, build confidence, and lead fulfilling, authentic lives.

Common traits of autism

Every autistic individual is unique, but there are common patterns and experiences often associated with autism. These may include:

  • Differences in social communication: challenges with understanding social cues, maintaining conversations, interpreting non-verbal language, or navigating complex social dynamics.
  • Sensory sensitivities: heightened or reduced sensitivity to sensory input such as sounds, lights, textures, smells, or touch. Sensory experiences may feel overwhelming or difficult to filter.
  • Preference for structure and routine: a strong need for predictability, with changes or unexpected events often causing distress.
  • Focused interests: deep, sustained engagement with specific subjects, activities, or hobbies, often pursued with exceptional passion and expertise.
  • Repetitive behaviours: repeating movements, sounds, words, or activities as a way to self-soothe or create familiarity.
  • Differences in emotional regulation: difficulties with recognising, expressing, or managing emotions, particularly in stressful or unfamiliar situations.

It is important to remember that traits vary widely from person to person. Some individuals may show many of these characteristics, while others may only relate to a few.

Strengths often seen in individuals with autism

While autism presents certain challenges, it is also associated with a wide range of strengths and positive qualities. Many autistic individuals demonstrate:

  • Exceptional attention to detail: a strong ability to notice patterns, small differences, or inconsistencies that others might overlook.
  • Deep focus and commitment: the ability to concentrate intensely on subjects or tasks that are meaningful to them, often achieving a high level of expertise.
  • Honesty and authenticity: a natural inclination towards directness, transparency, and sincerity in communication.
  • Strong memory: excellent recall of facts, events, procedures, or areas of special interest.
  • Creativity and innovation: unique approaches to problem-solving and a capacity for original thinking that challenges conventional perspectives.

Not every autistic person will identify with all of these traits, and many have their own individual strengths that may not be listed here. With the right support, self-understanding, and environments that recognise their needs, autistic individuals can build on their strengths and thrive in ways that feel meaningful and authentic to them.
